Cinematographer, Peter Jackson GBCT BSC
It is with great sadness and deep sorrow that Peter passed away on Sunday 12th November 2006 at Southlands Nursing Home Harrogate.
PJ as he was affectionately known, had suffered a massive stroke at home on 3rd October and had fought his condition until the onset of Pneumonia made him very poorly. He passed peacefully with his family by his side.
PJ had a long and distinguished career spanning over forty years, starting with Five Cities Films in Bradford, West Yorkshire . He joined Yorkshire Television as a founder member in 1968 and became the Head Cameraman of the Film Department shooting a whole myriad of prestigious material. He then retired in 1997 but carried on in a freelance capacity right up to three days before his illness. He has many prolific film dramas and documentaries under his wing and the sheer vastness of this mans achievements cannot possibly be documented here.
Whickers World, Horris, Follyfoot, Flambards, Sorrel & Son, The Beiderbecke Trilogy, Cloud Waltzer, One Summer, May We Borrow Your Husband, The Racing Game, Romance On The Orient Express, The Attic, William Palmer, Chiller, Stalagluft, Shipman, Hamish MacBeth, The Darling Buds Of May (entire series,) A Touch Of Frost (37 films/entire series,) Micawber, The Quest Trilogy and Diamond Geezer only skims the surface.
PJ was the second DOP in Television to be awarded a BSC, something which I know he was extremely proud of. He also received a lifetime achievement award from the RTS.
I joined PJ's crew as a budding Clapper/Loader in 1984 having not long since left school. I became his longest serving Focus Puller and he eventually gave me the chance to Operate 2 nd Unit. My career would certainly not have evolved in the same way without his patience and perseverance and he often called me his second son. PJ always demanded the highest standards and surrounded himself with the best technicians and it was an achievement in itself to be a part of his team. I have had the pleasure of working with some industry heavyweights such as John Maskall BSC, Jamie Harcourt BSC, Dave Carey and Ian Jackson BSC.
Peter was always a gentleman and afforded the highest level of respect and remained one of the industries giants until his very last moment.
PJ has painted light onto some of the industries greats including: Sir David Jason, Dirk Bogarde, Cheryl Ladd, Mary Steenbergen, Paul Schofield, Catherine Zeta Jones to name but a few. His work will be enjoyed for generations to come. It's almost impossible to switch on your Television these days without seeing Peter Jackson DOP on the credits somewhere.
I have happy memories of being with PJ's team very recently whilst shooting 2nd Unit on his last film, Diamond Geezer with Sir David Jason in Monoco, South France. Sadly he will never see this finished work.
It is hard to even begin to construct an obituary for someone whom I spent so many dedicated years with, loved and admired. The passing of PJ represents a loss and a change in our industry that can never be replaced. The dedication and professionalism he offered to every single production is unsurpassed, the absence of his gentleness, warmth, dry sense of humour and sheer presence will leave an abyss. He will be sadly missed by an awful lot of people.
My heartfelt condolences are offered to his wife Jean and his children Ian and Zoe.
